The Making of Metamorphosis

Metamorphosis was a labor of love.

Conceived by a group of five men in February, 1993, the project grew to involve over 300 men in its content, production, fundraising and distribution. During the spring of 1993, the men of four men's communities in the San Francisco Bay Area — the San Francisco Men's Tribe, the East Bay Nation of Men, the Santa Cruz Men's Community and the South Bay Nation of Men — were invited to contribute to the book. 140 men submitted essays, poetry, photographs, short stories, and artwork that became the body of the book. In July, the editing and production of the book began, as did the fundraising effort. The raw manuscripts and artwork were edited during July and August. Book design and layout were completed in September. Final proofing and handoff to the printer occurred in October, culminating in a press run of 2,000 copies in November.

To avoid compromise of design and content, the publication team chose to self-publish rather than seek a commercial publisher. The significant cost of preparation and printing (in excess of $30,000) would be paid for entirely through book sales and sponsorship. The men of the communities responded magnificently, buying several hundred advance copies and contributing more than $6,000 in sponsorship donations. Since publication, more books have gone as gifts and reorders, and many have been sold through bookstores in the Bay Area. Several hundred copies remain.
