The Metamorphosis lithograph is an example of the extraordinary support Metamorphosis received from the men's communities. The possibility of incorporating a lithograph into the book was suggested by Rick Dula of Magnolia Press, a lithographic printing firm in Oakland, California. Rick and Magnolia's owner, Donald Farnsworth, offered to print our choice of lithograph for just the cost of the materials. This generous offer allowed us to include an original fine-art lithograph with every Special Collector's Edition of Metamorphosis.
We asked the artists of the men's communities to submit work for possible lithograph reproduction. We selected a watercolor by James Heidt who, working with Rick Dula, re-executed the watercolor as a drawing suitable for lithographic reproduction.
For the limited edition lithographic run, the drawing was rendered in duotone and printed on museum-quality paper, then hand-signed by the artist. On page 2 of Metamorphosis there is a photographic reproduction of the lithograph, similar to the one above. The actual lithograph is bound into the front cover of the book, protected by a transparent plastic sleeve. The lithograph may be easily removed from the sleeve and separately framed.
