Four men's communities contributed to the content and production of Metamorphosis: the East Bay Nation of Men (EBNoM); the San Francisco Men's Tribe (SFT); the Santa Cruz Men's Community (SCMC); and the South Bay Nation of Men (SBNoM).
These communities provide a support network for men to experience the unique bond that is part of every man's being. Much of that support occurs within teams, typically groups of four or more men who meet regularly. All contributors to this book are identified with their team and community affiliations. The following four paragraphs, written by leaders in each community, offer a glimpse into the purpose and personality of each.
The EAST BAY NATION OF MEN was created in August, 1991, by six men sitting around a table at a Denny's restaurant; the Charter was written on a napkin. Our mission is to support men, teams, and community. The East Bay Nation of Men has grown to a membership of nearly 100 men, most on teams of four to eight men, all supporting each other with passionate and steadfast commitment. Community meetings are held once a month, with an emphasis on outrageous fun, ritual, manly food, individual and team support, and the planning of men's and family events and community service projects. Membership is open to men of any race, creed, or sexual orientation; the only requirement is the desire to have men in your life.
The SAN FRANCISCO MEN'S TRIBE is a community of men in the Bay Area dedicated to being together in supportive ways.
The SANTA CRUZ MEN'S COMMUNITY (now called the Santa Cruz Nation of Men) was formed in November, 1981, by one four-man team. At the time, it was an adjunct of the Monterey Community; within a year, enough teams had formed in Santa Cruz County to split off from the Monterey group. In the intervening dozen years, the group has spent thousands of hours in community service, including building a community center and a library; working on half a dozen public schools; cleaning up low-income housing; and participating in a massive earthquake relief effort in 1989. Fun was not neglected, however; we organized numerous river trips, camp-outs, formal dinners, and dances. Today the SCMC still flourishes, using the same founding credo of 1981: To live our lives as men at our best.
The SOUTH BAY NATION OF MEN is a community of men who support each other to be their best. Formed in 1991 to "support and honor men, teams, and community," the Nation of Men has over 100 members in chapters in the South Bay, East Bay, Santa Cruz, and North Bay. We offer monthly meetings and many opportunities to get together for camaraderie, growth, and fun. The organization is not affiliated with any particular religious or political ideologies.
